“I was looking at photos of brunettes from the ’70s, specifically Jaclyn Smith and Anjelica Huston, and I kept seeing orange makeup,” recalls Dubroff about what prompted her to reach for a vivid peach eye shadow in her kit. She brushed Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Eyeshadow in Rouge-Gorge from eyelid to brow on the 26-year-old, who was wearing a floral Alexander McQueen gown. The pop of orange against Johnson’s flawless complexion with a soft lip was an acclaimed “peaches and cream” moment. Says Johnson: “That was something new for me. Pati made me feel fresh and like I really belonged in that dress.” Dubroff, who usually accentuates the actress’ mouth (“She likes her natural lip bumped up a few shades, so I had to convince her to go softer on the lip”), veered from what worked so well earlier this year while promoting Fifty Shades of Grey. Was it worth it? Says Dubroff, “Dakota loved it, and social media went crazy over it!”

So color us shocked: Dakota Johnson didn't just own her saffron-colored Gucci gown at Saturday's LACMA gala in Los Angeles, she positively radiated sheer gorgeousness.

We consulted with her go-to makeup artist Pati Dubroff on how she prepped Johnson, whom she adores, for the event.
"Dakota is definitely a jeans and boots kind of girl by day but has fun with dressing up for sure," says Dubroff.
So, let's talk about that gown.
"When Dakota told me she would be wearing a mustard-colored dress, my immediate first thought was of a burgundy lip, and this was before seeing that the dress had a burgundy flower attached to the sweet velvet ribbon at the neckline," says Dubroff. "I love synchronicity like that, and with Dakota we have a real synchronicity."
To not overwhelm the clothing, "We decided to keep the eyes very soft and innocent and focus all the power in the lip. I also wanted there to be an evident flush on the cheeks," says Dubroff.
Her go-to must-haves:
  "For the eyes I lined the inner rims with Smashbox kohl liner in Bare."
  "For cheeks I used Kevyn Aucoin Beauty creamy glow in Patrice, a shade that looks dark but applied with a light hand (and a stipple brush) is the perfect flush."
"For lips, we wanted a deep dark base with a pop of color in the center. For the deep base I used Chanel Rough Allure in Eleganteand on top of that from shot of brightness Nars Steven Klein in No Shame."
And then, there's her charming, youthful, sexy hair, courtesy of super-stylist Mark Townsend.
"The ponytail with fringe was Dakota's idea and I immediately agreed that it was the perfect hairstyle to compliment such a feminine dress and the amazing lip Pati Dubroff was going to do," Townsend tells us. "We decided to place the ponytail a little high for a young and modern feel."
His go-to must-haves:
Dove Whipped Cream Mousse, "applied to her damp hair and blow dried with a round brush to get the hair smooth and shiny with lots of movement."
"I used Harry Josh Pro Tools 1 inch curling iron to add waves to the hair inside the ponytail. What makes a ponytail red carpet ready is the details, so I sprayed extra hold hairspray on a reusable mascara wand to clean up any loose hairs at the nape of the neck and around the ears and then I wrapped a 1 inch piece of velvet around the base of the ponytail."
"I finished by spraying Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black Dry Shampoo on the ponytail for texture and shine and on her fringe to keep them full and in place (this works better than hairspray because it keeps the hair soft)."
